After the Pro Security Cabinet, President Gabriel Boric announced the construction of a new ‘high and maximum security’ prison in the Metropolitan Region, increasing the number of places in this type of prison by 500.

The president said that ‘this will allow effective control of the criminal leaders of organised gangs. It is a maximum security prison that will be located in the Metropolitan Region and will cost approximately 90 billion pesos and will increase the number of places in this type of prison by 500’. The minister of the Interior, Carolina Tohá, added that the commune where it will be installed has already been chosen but will not be announced.

To make this initiative a reality, the president announced that he will send a bill to Congress to ‘exempt this construction from various procedures and permits that usually delay the execution of these projects, given the priority that this issue has. I hope to count on the cooperation and sense of urgency of Congress’.

‘Of the 600 places we currently have in high and maximum security prisons, 756 new places have already been announced for this type of prison. Between now and the end of the government, we have planned 100 places in La Laguna prison (in Talca) and 100 additional places in Antofagasta, and this is a prison infrastructure plan that goes from now until 2030,’ he added.

On the management of detainees in maximum security prisons, a special force will be created in the Gendarmerie that is trained to ‘face these threats with the full support of the government and the best of international experience. These are gendarmes who will work in high security prisons under a special regime, and these special powers will also need the approval of Congress by passing a bill,’ he said.
