In the 2024 edition of SeguridadExpo, one of the main topics was the presence of non-lethal weapons to reduce risks in critical situations. In this regard, a new technology to be implemented by law enforcement agencies in Chile was unveiled. Carabineros de Chile has announced that it will begin to use tasers in situations of domestic violence (VIF) within the Metropolitan Region. This decision is part of a pilot plan supported by the Government, with the intention of providing police officers with non-lethal tools to deal with emergencies without having to resort to firearms. Regarding the specifications of the device, according to a report by Radio ADN, tasers are electric shock weapons designed to temporarily immobilize a person by means of electric shocks. They work by firing two darts connected by wires to the gun, which transmit electrical impulses that interfere with the nervous system and cause temporary paralysis, but without causing permanent damage. The use of these devices is intended for situations where police intervention requires reducing an aggressor without endangering the integrity of the victim or the officers. According to the information provided, tasers may only be used by police officers with specific training and who comply with the established protocols, which include limitations on the areas of the body where the electric shock may be applied and the prohibition of their use on minors. The initiative arises in response to the growing number of cases of domestic violence in Chile and the need to optimize police procedures in this type of situation. The police have pointed out that this type of device is used in other countries as an intermediate alternative between dialogue and the use of lethal force, allowing the aggressor to be temporarily immobilized without causing permanent damage. Over the next few months, Carabineros will carry out training and evaluations to ensure proper use of the weapons. A balance and analysis of the results obtained is expected for the second half of the year, which could lead to an expansion of the program in other regions or the incorporation of more units within the Metropolitan Region. The metropolitan governor, Claudio Orrego, has supported the initiative and has suggested that, depending on the results, the possibility of extending its use to other types of situations should be analyzed, provided that strict protocols are ensured to avoid a disproportionate use of force. The implementation of these measures continues to generate debate, with sectors seeing them as a useful tool for public safety and others warning of the need for strict regulation to avoid possible excesses in their application. “We are glad that the government has taken the decision to finally implement the non-lethal pistols, known as Tasers, to protect the lives of our carabineros,” added Claudio Orrego. SeguridadExpo 2025 will continue to be the meeting point for innovation and technologies in security and prevention, with the use of non-lethal weapons once again being an important topic for the prevention and control of emergencies.
